Ram 1500 (DT) is the first full-size pickup to ever earn Top Safety Pick+

FCA Canada is pleased to announce that the Ram 1500 (DT) and the Jeep Cherokee have earned 2019 ‘Top Safety Pick’ ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Ram 1500 (DT):

The 2020 Ram 1500 (DT) Crew Cab model and certain 2019 Crew Cab configurations are the first full-size pickups to earn ‘Top Safety Pick+’ under current IIHS guidelines.

The ‘Top Safety Pick+’ applies to 2020 Ram 1500 (DT) Crew Cab pickups when equipped with adaptive LED projector headlamps with high-beam assist, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), and Forward Collison Mitigation.

Of the six crashworthiness evaluations conducted by the IIHS, the Ram 1500 (DT) scored the highest possible rating in the following categories.

  • Small overlap front: driver-side
  • Small overlap front: passenger side
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Side Roof strength
  • Head restraint & seats

The Ram 1500 (DT)’s safety story begins with innovations such as its patented approach to frame-rail construction.  The truck’s front frame-rails are splayed to better manage crash energy in certain types of frontal collisions.

Also unique to the Ram 1500 (DT) is its use of an Integrated Radar Camera Module (IRCM) to accommodate Forward Collision Mitigation. The IRCM consolidates radar and camera components behind the vehicle’s rearview mirror, which not only simplifies their interface, but keeps important technology out of harm’s way in the event of minor collisions.

The Forward Collision Mitigation system in the Ram 1500 (DT) earned a ‘superior’ rating from IIHS.  The optional feature boasts sensor-fusion technology, which blends camera capability with radar detection to determine when an impact is imminent.  The system initially warns the driver to take action to avoid a collision.  If the driver does not act in a timely manner, the system may activate the vehicles’ brakes if collision risk remains.

The Ram 1500 (DT)’s adaptive LED projector headlamps with high-beam assist also contributed to its ‘Top Safety Pick+’ rating. The technology was refined in May of this year, and helped earn the highest IIHS rating.

Since its launch the Ram 1500 (DT) has received praise from journalists and industry associations across the country, capturing numerous awards and accolades including the coveted Motor Trend ‘Truck of the Year’ award and a Wards ‘10 Best Engines’ win for the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with eTorque.  The addition of the prestigious ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award from the IIHS validates our commitment to delivering some the best-engineered and safest vehicles on the road.

Jeep Cherokee:

The new-for-2019 Jeep Cherokee has also earned a ‘Top Safety Pick’ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The rating applies to 2019 Jeep Cherokee’s when equipped with Jeep’s available Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology, Forward Collision Warning-Plus, and LED projector headlamps with optional automatic high-beam control.

High-strength-steel upgrades to the 2019 Jeep Cherokee’s A-pillar and hinge-pillar are among the key engineering changes to improve performance in the IIHS small-overlap tests, and contribute to its ‘Top Safety Pick’ rating.

The Jeep Cherokee recorded the highest possible rating awarded by the IIHS in all six crashworthiness tests, three of which simulate frontal impacts.  The remaining tests inflict damage consistent with a side impact, rear impact and a rollover.

Jeep Cherokee’s Forward Collision Warning-Plus system was graded as ‘superior,’ the highest possible rating awarded by IIHS in front crash prevention.  The optional feature boasts sensor-fusion technology, which blends camera capability with radar detection to determine when an impact is imminent.

The system initially warns the driver to take action to avoid a collision. If the driver does not act in a timely manner, the system may activate the vehicle’s brakes if collision risk remains.

Jeep Cherokee’s standard-equipment LED projector headlamps with optional automatic high-beam control also contributed to its ‘Top Safety Pick’ rating.  The available feature switches headlamp modes between high- and low-beam function – depending on traffic conditions – without driver intervention.
